Monisha Unni was a popular actress of the malayalam film industry during the late 80’s and early 90’s. She made her acting debut with the film ‘nakhashatangal’. Her other noted films are ‘Sayam Sandhya’, ‘Aryan’, ‘Perumthachan’, ‘Kadavu’, ‘Kamaladalam’, ‘Champakulam Thachan’ and ‘Moondravadhu Kann’.
Monisha was born as the daughter of Mr. Narayanan Unni and Sreedevi at Panniyankara, Kozhikode. Her father was in the leather business in Bangalore. Her mother is a classical dancer and noted actress. Monisha Unni did her schooling at St. Charles High School, Bangalore and Bishop Cotton Girls School, Bangalore. She completed her graduation in psychology at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore.
Monisha learned dance during her childhood and did her first stage performance at the age of nine. She did stage shows in temples and concerts. She won the Kaushika Award in the Karnataka state-level Mohiniyattam competition in 1985. She has an elder brother Sajith Unni. Monisha met with a car accident near Cherthala and died on the spot.
Monisha started her career in acting with ‘Paavayya’, a tamil short film directed by U. S. Vaasan. She made her silver screen debut in 1986 with the film ‘Nakhashathangal’ directed by Hariharan. For her acting brilliance playing the role of Gauri, she won the National film award for best actress.
Her other noted malayalam films are ‘Rithubhedam’, ‘Sayam Sandhya’, ‘Aryan’, ‘Kanakambarangal’, ‘Adhipan’, ‘Perumthachan’, ‘Venal Kinavukal’, ‘Kadavu’, ‘Oru Kochu Bhoomikukukkam’, ‘Kamaladalam’ and ‘Cheppadividya’. She has also acted in films like ‘Pookal Vidhum Thoothu’ (Tamil), ‘Lawyer Bharathi Devi’ (Telugu) and ‘Moondravadh Kann (Tamil).
